The Birth of My Last Son Mosiah
August 30, 2009
So much to tell, so little time. I had a baby son on Tuesday August 11, 2009 at 1pm. He weighed 5 pounds 12 oz and was 20 inches long. He was born 3 weeks early by c-section at 37 weeks of gestation. We named him Mosiah Teancum Hardman.
Mosiah is a form of the name Moses and it means Savior. In the Book of Mormon there are two righteous kings/prophets named Mosiah. What impressed me most about the latter king Mosiah is the fact that he worked with his own his hands to support himself in order not to tax his people and not to be a burden to them, and that he followed in the steps of his father in all things.
Teancum is the greatest warrior in the Book of Mormon. Teancum risked and gave his life in order to single handedly stop the war and bloodshed in his country. I wish we had more leaders like King Mosiah and Teancum today. But that's why the birth of every child brings new hope into the world.
I am deathly afraid of surgery, so on the day before my c section, I woke in a panic. My palms were sweating, and my blood pressure was dangerously high. I could not get a hold of my doctor to walk me through my upcoming surgery, so I prayed for help. My sweet nurse Tina got a surgical nurse to explain to me what to expect. After talking to her, I got the idea that it would be best if I was not alone before and during the surgery. I decided to ask my 4 best friends Ashley, Brandi, Stephanie, and Tina to come to the hospital and to have our kind of party, which usually consists of sitting around, talking, and mildly arguing. It was the best solution to take my mind off my fears. My friends readily agreed to come and support me. Just looking forward to our get together settled my nerves.
My surgery was scheduled for 11am, so everyone showed up about 9am. We had a wonderful morning together discussing controversial topics and making plans for future outings. When my nurse walked in to check on me she said she felt like she just walked into the TV show called "The View" where 5 women with differing opinions sit around discussing things. My surgery got postponed till 1 pm, so our party was extended a couple of hours. My husband just sat back and enjoyed watching us, every once in a while throwing in a joke.
When it was time to cut me open, my panic returned in spite of my reassuring friends. My friend, (not the nurse) Tina, as well as my husband, were allowed accompany me to surgery. Tina's job was to distract me by continuously talking in her positive tone while they cut into me. She did her job fabulously from what my husband tells me, but I did not hear a thing she said. The anesthetist gave me some awful drug that put me into a waking nightmare. But more on that later; I'm trying to keep this post positive. For the negative aspects of my surgery, tune into a future email.
Mosiah was born at 1pm very healthy, though very little. All my other children were well over 8 pounds; Mosiah was only 5 lb 12 oz. I am very grateful for my husband and friends who supported me during this difficult time. I am also very grateful to my sister-Kinga, my mother in law-Nancy, and my mom-Grace, for coming to care for my other kids and home when I was unable to do so.
I am also grateful to God for giving me my mother's intuition to not follow the doctor's orders to have the baby at 34 weeks, but to keep him in my womb as long as possible. Mosiah did not have to go to the NICU and he scored 9s on his newborn tests, whatever they are called. He did a have jaundice for the first couple of weeks of his life, hence the last picture on the billi bed at home, but he did not have to be hospitalized for it. All the other pictures are from the hospital in chronological order. In the second to last my mother in law Nancy is showing the baby to my daughter Gracie and to her friend Amelia.

Moj Ostatni Syn Mosiah Sie Urodzil
30 Sierpien 2009
Mam tak duzo do napisania, a mam tak malo czasu. 11 Sierpnia 2009 urodzilam mojego ostatniego syna o 1 po poludniu. On wazyl 2,6 kg i mial 51 cm wzrostu. Nazwalismy go Mosiah Teancum Hardman.
Mosiah to inny format imienia Mojzesz. To imie znaczy "Zbawiciel". On tez we wszytkim nasladowal swojego ojca.
Teancum to najbardziej odzielny wojownik w Ksiedze Mormona. On umarl jak drugi raz to zrobil.
My bardzo lubimy razem sie zbierac i miec dyskusje na rozne tematy. Nawet lubimy troche sie spierac, bo mamy rozne opinie.

Congratulations!!!
I was beginning to wonder and worry about you, Sylwia....no posts for almost a month???
Congratulations on a fine, healthy, and beautiful son!
He is SO cute! I can't believe all that black hair. Have your other kids had black hair when they were born? I'm proud of you for sticking to your guns and doing what you felt was right despite the opposition. Hope you are recovering well. Congratulations!
Sylwia, I'm sorry you're so tired and uncomfortable. Mosiah is so perfect looking, even right after birth, which is hard to do. Most babies look a little weird (mine did) but he looks so peaceful and perfect. Hope you're feeling better soon.
YIPPEE!! Congrats!! The baby is here! I kept checking your blog waiting to see updates, and I am so glad things went ok and the baby is healthy.
Congrats, Slywia! Mosiah is such a handsome little baby. I'm glad it all turned out well as that prospect of surgery is always scary. Glad you had those awesome ladies to help you out. I sure miss Tina and Brandi- they are great friends! :-)
Sylwia,
I love this post. Super fun!!! The only step we didn't take on this awesome Journey was Conception!!! I still remember going to Wal-mart to get the Pregnancy test all 6 of us in the bathroom laughing and waiting for the results. So Much fun!!! I'm so glad your listened to your instincts and kept Mosiah in until you were 37 weeks. He is so healthy and darling
I'm so glad you are feeling a little better!
Love you.
Tina
Welcome back to the blogosphere! You've been missed here and at church. Little Mosiah is so adorable. I love all his dark hair. Hope things continue to get better for you and that you are enjoying being home with your family.
Congrats! I love all his dark hair. Did any of your other kids have hair that dark?
all my babies were born with dark hair, then it all fell out, then it grew back in blond, then it darkened back to brown as they got older...
Congrats- he is beautiful. Worth the pain and effort, right? Sorry the c-section was a bad experience - it is all over now and you have your amazing little son!
I'm so glad to see your story, from you, on here. I think you were smart to have your 'distraction & support party' on delivery day and I'm glad everyone is okay.
I've never seen a billi bed like that - interesting! My girl had to stay in the hospital for her light treatment :( but it was much shorter.
Mother's intuition is truly a wonderful gift that need to not neglect.
Sylwia! So glad to catch up on your blog and see pictures of Mosiah! What a BEAUTIFUL little boy! Hope things are going well at home! Keep in touch!
